Christmas Unwrapped - The History of Christmas

Centuries before Jesus walked the Earth, early Europians were celebrating light and birth in the darkest days of winter. In a Norse country this winter celebration was known as Yule. In ancient Rome, winter solstice, December 25th was the birthday of Mithra, the Sun God at the same time. Mithra was born from a rock, shepherds came to worship him as he was an infant God and many of those stories transferred to the Christian tradition.

The Pagan Christ (2007)

There are 2.1 billion Christians on the planet – roughly one third of the entire human population. At the heart of their religion is the New Testament and the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. To Christianity, the written word is the glue that binds the faith of its followers.

So, what if it could be proven that Jesus never existed? What if there was evidence that every word of the New Testament – the cornerstone of Christianity – is based on myth and metaphor?

Based on Tom Harpur’s national bestseller, The Pagan Christ examines these very questions. During his research, Harpur discovered that the New Testament is wholly based on Egyptian mythology, that Jesus Christ never lived, and that – indeed – the text was always meant to be read allegorically. It was the founders of the Church who duped the world into taking a literal approach to the scriptures. And, according to Harpur, this was their fatal error – and the very reason Christianity is struggling today.

Who Wrote the Bible?

Religion is in the center of world politics today. The Bible has been used as an imperialistic power to justify their politics for centuries. However most of the people believe that the Bible is really the words of God. Theologian Dr. Robert Beckford seeks the answers and makes voyage to Jerusalem, Turkey, Rome and the US to find out the origins of the Testaments.

Constantine's Sword (2008)

In an empire united under the Cross, Jews were now in danger. The Church fathers decided the Jews should wander in misery forever without a home. The Roman empire fell despite it embraced Christianity. The Western world descended into chaos that lasted for six centuries. Then the Pope cried "God wills it", calling for a crusade, a war of the Cross against Islam."

James Carroll, a former Catholic priest, looks at the bad side of Christianity from Constantine the Great to the U.S Air Force Academy.

I suppose James Carroll is still a theist, he claims that Christianity turned violent after Constantine, and the documentary is not about fighting against Christianity, but is a good source to see the bad influence of Catholicism through history and the indoctrination of the evangelist movement among the Air Force Academy today.

The most touching moment of the film is that Carroll reveals Edith Stein's letter for the first time. Edith Stein was a brilliant young Jewish philosopher who converted to Catholicism in 1922. She wrote a letter to Pope Pius XII for protection from the Nazis, but got no answer. That Pope was the one who called "Hitler's Cardinal".

COLLISION: Christopher Hitchens vs. Douglas Wilson

"I think faith is, if it's a virtue at all, and I'm not sure that it is. It's certainly the most overrated of them. Maybe one of the deadly virtues." Christopher Hitchens

Collision is a perfect example for a documentary looks into the both points of view. Christopher Hitchens is clever and witty. In the first impression, as a debater he looks like that kind of man makes never mistakes, but he has a weary face in comparison to his opponent (I wonder why. Maybe due to the lack of power of faith?). I'm glad that he is on our side. :)

Letting Go of God - Julia Sweeney (Audiobook)

Julia Sweeney says she was a "happy Catholic girl" when, one day, she walked into church and signed up for a Bible-study course. "What an eye opener that was!" she says. "Next thing you know, I was on a quest for something I could really believe in. I traveled to places like Bhutan, Ecuador, and my local Starbucks looking for answers. Would I embrace Buddhism? New Age pseudo-science? Was I a freak for feeling the way I did, or were there other people out there just like me? I was grappling with serious questions. But, somehow, a lot of the things that were happening to me seemed, well, funny." Equally comedic and insightful, Letting Go of God is Sweeney's brilliant one-woman show about her struggle with her faith. Grappling with the seeming contradictions in Adam and Eve, Noah, the Ten Commandments, and even the teachings of Jesus - and trying to understand the Bible's messages about morality, family values, and human suffering while faced with door-knocking Mormons and wise-cracking priests - Sweeney takes listeners on her very personal journey from God to "not-God". This performance was recorded on November 19, 2005, at the Ars Nova Theatre in New York City. Amazon

Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion (Audiobook with Text) UPDATED!

New York Times Best Seller

The antireligion wars started by Daniel Dennett and Sam Harris will heat up even more with this salvo from celebrated Oxford biologist Dawkins. For a scientist who criticizes religion for its intolerance, Dawkins has written a surprisingly intolerant book, full of scorn for religion and those who believe. But Dawkins, who gave us the selfish gene, anticipates this criticism. He says it's the scientist and humanist in him that makes him hostile to religions—fundamentalist Christianity and Islam come in for the most opprobrium—that close people's minds to scientific truth, oppress women and abuse children psychologically with the notion of eternal damnation. While Dawkins can be witty, even confirmed atheists who agree with his advocacy of science and vigorous rationalism may have trouble stomaching some of the rhetoric: the biblical Yahweh is "psychotic," Aquinas's proofs of God's existence are "fatuous" and religion generally is "nonsense." The most effective chapters are those in which Dawkins calms down, for instance, drawing on evolution to disprove the ideas behind intelligent design. In other chapters, he attempts to construct a scientific scaffolding for atheism, such as using evolution again to rebut the notion that without God there can be no morality. He insists that religion is a divisive and oppressive force, but he is less convincing in arguing that the world would be better and more peaceful without it.

Letter to a Christian Nation - Sam Harris

New York Times Best Seller

In response to The End of Faith, Sam Harris received thousands of letters from Christians excoriating him for not believing in God. Letter to A Christian Nation is his reply. Using rational argument, Harris offers a measured refutation of the beliefs that form the core of fundamentalist Christianity. In the course of his argument, he addresses current topics ranging from intelligent design and stem-cell research to the connections between religion and violence. In Letter to a Christian Nation, Sam Harris boldly challenges the influence that faith has on public life in the United States.

“I dare you to read this book…it will not leave you unchanged. Read it if it is the last thing you do.”
— Richard Dawkins, author of The Selfish Gene and The God Delusion, from his Foreward to the UK Edition.

Daniel C. Dennett - Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon

In his characteristically provocative fashion, Dennett, author ofDarwin's Dangerous Idea and director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University, calls for a scientific, rational examination of religion that will lead us to understand what purpose religion serves in our culture. Much like E.O. Wilson (In Search of Nature), Robert Wright (The Moral Animal), and Richard Dawkins (The Selfish Gene), Dennett explores religion as a cultural phenomenon governed by the processes of evolution and natural selection. Religion survives because it has some kind of beneficial role in human life, yet Dennett argues that it has also played a maleficent role. He elegantly pleads for religions to engage in empirical self-examination to protect future generations from the ignorance so often fostered by religion hiding behind doctrinal smoke screens. Because Dennett offers a tentative proposal for exploring religion as a natural phenomenon, his book is sometimes plagued by generalizations that leave us wanting more ("Only when we can frame a comprehensive view of the many aspects of religion can we formulate defensible policies for how to respond to religions in the future"). Although much of the ground he covers has already been well trod, he clearly throws down a gauntlet to religion. Publishers Weekly

Atheist Universe: The Thinking Person's Answer to Christian Fundamentalism - David Mills

Is there really a God? Or does God exist only in our heads?

Is the Bible truly God's word? Or is it a jumble of fanciful myths?

Atheist Universe details why God is unnecessary to explain the universe's diversity, organization and beauty. Using simple, straightforward logic, this book rebuts ever argument that claims to "prove" God's existence.

A comprehensive primer for contering today's religious dogma, Atheist Universe addresses all the historical and scientific questions, including:

- What is atheism, and why is it so misunderstood?
- If God is a myth, then how did the universe appear?
- Without God, is there an objective "right" or "wrong"?
- What is the meaning of life without God?
- Is there evidence of Jesus' miracles and resurrection?
- Can atheists explain "near death" experiences and medical miracles?
- Can science and the Bible realistically be reconciled?
- What is the behind-the-scenes relationship between politics and religion?
