National Geographic: Guns, Germs, and Steel - Part 1: Out Of Eden

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jared Diamond is one of my favorite evolutionary biologists and most important researchers of our time. In his popular book Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies he has claimed that spreading of indigenous grain species all over world is the reason of imbalance between modern civilizations today.

How was possible that only 168 Spanish soldiers were able to kill 80000 men of great Incan Emperor Atahualpa's army and capture him?

Why was the New World conquered so easily?

Why did the world ever become so unequal?

So this 3 part documentary focuses on these controversial ideas. The first episode is dealing with the origins of agriculture and spreading of the domestical plants and animals from South West Asia (better to say the Fertile Crescent).

National Geographic: Guns, Germs, and Steel - Part 2: Conquest

Second episode of Gun, Germs, and Steel.

On November 15th 1532, the Spanish conquistadors met the IncanEmperor Atahualpa, in Peru.

Within a day most of the Incan soldiers were slaughtered and after that the Emperor surrendered.

How was that happened?

Did the war between horses and llamas bring the end of a civilization?

Darwin's Brave New World (Episode 3) Publish and Be Damned

The arrival of Alfred Russel Wallace's letter in June 1858 has thrown Charles Darwin into panic. This letter threatens to destroy years of work which began on five year voyage in southern hemisphere. Darwin spends the next 20 years painstakingly gathering evidence. He battles illness and the cruel reality of his own theory. But on the other side of the world Alfred Wallace has come up with the almost identical theory. Now Darwin will need the help of his loyal supporters more than ever.

The book which Charles Darwin never meant to write is about to be judged by the outside world.

Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed - Jared Diamond (Audiobook)

Jared Diamond's Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed is the glass-half-empty follow-up to his Pulitzer Prize-winning Guns, Germs, and Steel. While Guns, Germs, and Steelexplained the geographic and environmental reasons why some human populations have flourished, Collapse uses the same factors to examine why ancient societies, including the Anasazi of the American Southwest and the Viking colonies of Greenland, as well as modern ones such as Rwanda, have fallen apart. Not every collapse has an environmental origin, but an eco-meltdown is often the main catalyst, he argues, particularly when combined with society's response to (or disregard for) the coming disaster. Still, right from the outset of Collapse, the author makes clear that this is not a mere environmentalist's diatribe. He begins by setting the book's main question in the small communities of present-day Montana as they face a decline in living standards and a depletion of natural resources. Once-vital mines now leak toxins into the soil, while prion diseases infect some deer and elk and older hydroelectric dams have become decrepit. On all these issues, and particularly with the hot-button topic of logging and wildfires, Diamond writes with equanimity. Because he's addressing such significant issues within a vast span of time, Diamond can occasionally speak too briefly and assume too much, and at times his shorthand remarks may cause careful readers to raise an eyebrow. But in general, Diamond provides fine and well-reasoned historical examples, making the case that many times, economic and environmental concerns are one and the same. With Collapse, Diamond hopes to jog our collective memory to keep us from falling for false analogies or forgetting prior experiences, and thereby save us from potential devastations to come. While it might seem a stretch to use medieval Greenland and the Maya to convince a skeptic about the seriousness of global warming, it's exactly this type of cross-referencing that makes Collapse so compelling. Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies - Jared Diamond

Explaining what William McNeill called The Rise of the West has become the central problem in the study of global history. InGuns, Germs, and Steel Jared Diamond presents the biologist's answer: geography, demography, and ecological happenstance. Diamond evenhandedly reviews human history on every continent since the Ice Age at a rate that emphasizes only the broadest movements of peoples and ideas. Yet his survey is binocular: one eye has the rather distant vision of the evolutionary biologist, while the other eye--and his heart--belongs to the people of New Guinea, where he has done field work for more than 30 years.Amazon

Jared Diamond - The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee: Evolution and Human Life

More than 98 percent of human genes are shared with two species of chimpanzee. The 'third' chimpanzee is man. Jared Diamond surveys out life-cycle, culture, sexuality and destructive urges both towards ourselves and the planet to explore the ways in which we are uniquely human yet still influenced by our animal origins. Why Is Sex Fun?: The Evolution of Human Sexuality (Science Masters) - Jared Diamond

This book speculates on the evolutionary forces that shaped the unique aspects of human sexuality: female menopause, males' role in society, having sex in private, and--most unusual of all--having sex for fun instead of for procreation. Through comparative evolution, biologist and science author Diamond (Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fate of Human Societies), poses credible and thought-provoking yet entertaining factors: the lengthy period of dependency of human infants, sex for pleasure as the tie that helps bind a mother and a father together, and menopause as an evolutionary advantage that, by ending the childbearing years, allows females to pass wisdom and knowledge on to society and succeeding generations.
