Centuries before Jesus walked the Earth, early Europians were celebrating light and birth in the darkest days of winter. In a Norse country this winter celebration was known as Yule. In ancient Rome, winter solstice, December 25th was the birthday of Mithra, the Sun God at the same time. Mithra was born from a rock, shepherds came to worship him as he was an infant God and many of those stories transferred to the Christian tradition.
